March for Life

Have you ever had one of those ideas that sounds great in your head, but in reality it turns into a living nightmare?  That pretty much sums up our day a couple Fridays ago.

I knew the March for Life was coming to DC, and I knew it was going to be historic.  This march was a special one because it was the the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, and they were expecting record breaking crowds.  I heard numbers upwards of 500,000 people.  The pro-life movement is definitely something I support, so I had been toying with the idea of going to the march all week.  My only doubt was that it was supposed to be extremely cold, possibly even some snow.

But I woke up Friday morning and thought to myself, "This is what's great about living in DC.  I can BE there.  I'm doing it!"  I guess you could say I'm a romantic, but I love being able to say, "I was there, I stood up and was counted".

In my head, this is how I pictured the day going:

I would march up to the Supreme Court with these fine people, and demand that they overturn Roe v. Wade immediately!  Then when my grandkids ask me about the day I changed the world, I would recall the day when I was part of the biggest pro-life rally in Washington, the one that changed the hearts of millions and abortions were stopped forever.

However, this is how my day actually went:

Except Logan was crying the whole time, it was snowing, and we were surrounded on all sides by crazy protestors, that is, until we got lost in the bad side of town.

Let me back up.

I decided since we were going to be in the city, we should meet up with Daniel for lunch!  I thought to myself, the rally starts at noon, the march is at 1:30, a couple blocks later and we should be meeting for sushi by 2.  Even typing that now, I laugh at how naive I sound!  I guess there's just something about half a million people that doesn't compute with me!

Anyway, we made it to the mall around 12:45.  Logan magically fell asleep, and the mall didn't seem that crowded to me.  This was all part of an awful, awful plan to lure me into a false sense of security.  By the time we began "marching" (if you could even call it that) I was thinking, "what a piece of cake!"  Then I quickly realized that the reason the mall was so empty was because the street we were marching down was completely filled sidewalk to sidewalk with people, several blocks back.  Trying to merge into that craziness was like merging onto the biggest highway in LA during rush hour.  It took us an hour to reach the street, when we were suddenly surrounded by people on all sides, and moving very slowly forward with no chance of stopping without being run over.

I began to panic. We were stuck.  There was nowhere to go, no way out.  All I could see were people and signs on all sides.  Talking with a lady who had been to the March before, she told me it takes easily 5 hours to make it all the way to the Supreme Court.  On top of that, the people chanting things like "2-4-6-8!  We love babies!  They are great!" and "Obama, your mama, she chose life!  And so did your wife!" woke up Logan.  And he was screaming.  And then it began to snow.  My motherly instincts kicked in and I knew we had to get out.  Get out at all costs.  I thought, "I'm at a pro-life rally, people are chanting We Love Babies!,  I'm with a baby, these people will be nice to me, and let me out, right??"  Thankfully, I was right.  Once I decided to leave, people began blocking off an exit route, stopping traffic, and letting me pass.  The march basically came to a halt while I escaped.

But then I was faced with the challenge of making it to my lunch date with Daniel.  The route of the march made it so that it was impossible to take the most direct path to get to Heritage, where my husband works.  I found myself wandering around DC, in the snow, with a screaming, cold baby, when I took a wrong turn and realized I had wandered into the bad part of town.  There were people begging on the street, sleeping on benches, standing in lines for food, etc..... again, my momma bear instincts kicked in and I high tailed it out of there!

This story is dragging on, but just let me say, by the time I finally reached Daniel, Logan and I were both crying and frozen.

What happened to my perfect vision from that morning?  When did my dream turn into my nightmare?  Let's just say that when they say "record-breaking crowds" and "historic turnout", they mean it!  And all of those people will be marching down a very narrow street, very slowly, and chanting crazy, rhyming things.  And when they say "freezing temperatures" and "snow likely", they mean it!  And you and your little one will be subject to the elements, and no amount of layers will save you.  I guess sometimes when you get out there and do what you want to do, it doesn't turn out like you hope.  But you know what, I was there!  I stood up and was counted.  And who knows, maybe this rally will be the push the Supreme Court needs to overturn Roe v. Wade.  And maybe I will be able to tell my grandkids about the day I changed the world.  You never know!

26th Birthday

I think I mentioned in a previous post that I recently celebrated a birthday.  26.  I'm coming to grips with the very real fact that I am now in my mid to late 20's instead of just my mid 20's.  It dawned on me that I am no longer looking forward to getting older, in fact I am dreading it.  Getting older- BOO!  I want to stay 26 forever.  I do NOT want to enter the world of late 20's and definitely NEVER want to turn 30.

Despite my angst for getting older, we still partied like it was 1999 (when I was 13) and celebrated what is-- my life.  The celebration started on Monday when we did a little sightseeing (my fav)  and shopping (ok, my actual fav).  We went to the George Washington Masonic Memorial right here in Alexandria.  We drive by this spectacular building all the time, I can't believe we've never been in.

Well it was worth the wait!  Here's some of my favorite shots from the day:

Such a beautiful building!
Daniel's contractual family pose
Daniel's contractual offspring pose
Daniel's hero, George Washington (no contract for a pose with him!)
It was so fun to see Logan toddling around such a beautiful building
The view from the top.  I live here, really?  Don't pinch me, please!
Anyway- it was such a fun day!  And if you ever go, please, Please, PLEASE do yourself a favor and pay the extra $3 to take the guided tour.  You'll be glad you did!

The party continued Wednesday (my actual birthday) when we had dinner and cake.  The inspiration for my cake came from this beauty:

Isn't it cute??  Well here's my "version":

It's not too cute, I'm over it!  Can you even tell that the bottom layer is a darker shade of pink?  Whatever, Pinterest wins again.

One hidden treasure of this cake though - dairy and egg free!!  It's so simple to do!  Take a regular cake mix, instead of eggs, substitute 1/4 cup applesauce for each egg! And for the frosting, take your favorite frosting recipe and instead of using butter, use Earth Balance Spread.  And vuala!  Logan can eat my birthday cake!
And he did...

And he loved it!

And it was a GREAT birthday!

**My post was originally supposed to end here, but then Daniel surprised me with a fun dinner with friends last night.  He is so thoughtful, and it was great to have dinner with our wonderful friends we've made here in Virginia.  It really was a GREAT birthday!**

Washington DC Adventures

I love living in the Washington DC area.  Let me say that again with a little enthusiasm - I LOVE LIVING IN THE WASHINGTON DC AREA!  I feel so blessed to be here, and I hope we never ever leave... like ever.  Daniel and I lived here briefly 3 years ago while he was interning for a Senator, and I fell in love with the area.  There's just a feeling in Washington DC that I can't explain.  I've never felt  it anywhere else, but it feels like coming home and exploring a new place all at the same time. We tried to do something different every weekend in the city when we were here before, and we still didn't see it all!  Now that we are back we are continuing to explore and find new and different things to see and do here.  Plus, everything is new for Logan and it's been so fun seeing things through the eyes of a child.  Here are some of our adventures thus far.

The first weekend we were here:

The Jefferson, George Mason, and Martin Luther King Memorials

This was definitely first on my list, because these are some of the only Memorials I didn't get to see when we were here the first time.  These Monuments are right on the water, and it was such a beautiful day that day, that it really was breathtaking.  I love seeing the Memorials and Monuments of Washington DC.  It makes me so proud to be an American and to remember what these people did to make this county great.  Here are some of the shots from the day.

I love that this walk is right on the water- SO PRETTY!
A very sweaty me with the Memorial in the background
Logan "sight-seeing"
Mr. Jefferson, meet the Dews
Daniel deep in thought with Mr. Mason
Me getting chummy with George
Me (and some random family) with Martin Luther King Jr.
The Second Weekend We Were Here:

The Zoo

We saw about 1/2 of the animals at the zoo when we were here before.  We were having a lovely time when all of the sudden a torrential downpour sent us running to the closest metro stop.  Here we are... soaking wet!

Anyway, this time around our zoo experience was much drier (unless you count being soaked in sweat), and we got to see all the animals.  Logan especially liked the monkeys-probably because he's a little monkey himself!   For your viewing pleasure....

He was pointing at EVERYTHING!
Gotta love the Panda Bear!
National Geographic ain't got nothing on me!
An elephant in honor of the RNC!
They were SO pink! (and you all know how much I love pink!)
Last weekend:

Farmers Market, Museum of Natural History, and Nats Game

Last weekend was Labor Day, so Daniel only had to work a half day.  Logan and I came into DC to play with him for the other half.   I'm really not sure what it was about this particular day... but my heart was so filled with happiness.  There were moments I had tears in my eyes with gratitude and joy.  I really do love my life.  Here's the rundown from the weekend.

We hit up the Department of Agriculture's Farmer's Market first.  It was your basic Farmer's Market, even a little smaller than I was used to.  But wow, what fun! We got some veggies, fresh honey, homemade bread, and the best kettle corn I've ever had - THE BEST.  We munched on the kettle corn while we strolled on over to the Museum of Natural History. It's such a fun museum.  We had been there before but it was even more fun seeing it through 1 year old eyes.   Logan loved the dinosaur bones and the giant squid.  Just like at the zoo, he was pointing at everything and asking "That?"  I love how inquisitive that boy is.

The next day we took Logan to his first Major League Baseball Game.  We only lasted 7 innings because of the heat (and lack of a morning nap), but it was fun nonetheless.  We had hot dogs and garlic fries (not as good as the ones at PacBell Park, but ya know, they were pretty good).  Logan was scared by all the cheering at first, but by the end of it, he was cheering right along with everyone else.   Wow, I'm realizing this post has gotten a little out of control (like so long I'm surprised you're still reading)... so I'll shut up - but here are the pictures (I know that's all you want anyway!)

Another elephant picture in honor of the RNC
Logan loved the dinosaurs!
I thought this big fish was cool
Logan found a new mommy.  (and long lost brother)

PS- If you're wondering what we did the weekend I skipped over- well here's a picture to help you get the idea!
He's such a model- and SOOO cool!
